Approved Document E establishes sound insulation performance standards and sets out
practical guidance to satisfy Part E of the Building Regulations. It covers several
aspects of acoustical conditions in dwellings and other buildings, including:
E1. Protection against sound transmission from other parts of the building and
adjoining buildings - to reduce intrusion from neighbour noise
E2. Protection against sound within a dwelling-house - to resist sound transmission
through internal floors and through walls between bedrooms or from rooms containing
a water closet
E3. Reverberation in the common internal parts of buildings containing flats or
rooms for residential purposes - to control unnecessary noise in corridors and
stairwells
E4. Acoustic conditions in schools - to mitigate intrusion from external noise
or room to room noise transfer and to provide reasonable acoustical conditions for
teaching
Approved Document E explains the requirement to demonstrate compliance with the
performance standards specified in E1, by carrying out on site “Pre-completion Testing”
on representative samples of the actual building constructions. Tests should be
carried out once the dwellings are essentially complete, other than decoration,
and must be conducted by testing organisations with relevant accreditation such
as from the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS).
