Acoustical Investigation & Research Organisation Ltd. (AIRO)
was incorporated in 1958 to cater for the then growing need for
technical expertise in the acoustics and noise assessment and
control fields. The inauguration of the consultancy service was
soon followed by the opening of the laboratory facilities at Hemel
Hempstead in 1959. This was the first fully equipped, independent
commercial acoustics laboratory to operate in Britain, previous
laboratory facilities having been confined to the Department of
Scientific and Industrial Research and to the Research Department
of the BBC. The now extensive facilities available include sound
transmission suites for the measurement of sound insulation of
partitions and floors, a reverberation chamber for measuring sound
absorption and sound power level (including air flow related work)
and an anechoic chamber for specialised testing.
AIRO has established itself as a leading consultancy, offering
precision on-site measurement facilities and a specialist advisory
service for any problem involving acoustics or noise. This encompasses
many areas, notably building acoustics and noise control, industrial
noise control, measurement of sound insulation, environmental
noise surveys and impact statements, transportation noise and
the provisions of expert testimony in legal and planning hearings.
AIRO is a member of the Association of Noise Consultants, a member
of the British Measurement and Testing Association, and is a UKAS
accredited testing laboratory No 0483 for a wide range of acoustic
test procedures.

Our offices and laboratory facilities are located in the United Kingdom on Hemel Hempstead's Industrial Estate between the town centre and junction 8 of the M1 motorway. Our location provides convenient access via major roads such as the M1, M10, M25, A5 and A41 and is within easy reach of railway and airport links.
